Title:
The Globe in a Plastic Bag. Ocean to go.

Author:
Yasmin Palij

Description:
The artwork can be understand as provocative and exuberant demonstration of the terryfying fact that we are responsible for over 150 million tonnes of plastic waste in the ocean today. Nearly everyone, everywhere and every day one come into contact with plastics – especially plastic packaging. If current plastic consumption patterns and accumulating amounts of plastic waste remain the same it is expected to double over the next 20 years. This artwork is a proclamation to society that each of us (must) bear the responsibility to make a change for the environment. Ocean to go. It is not plastic floating in the ocean- the ocean is floating in plastic. Covered by a blue plastic bag, it can be guessed by the observer that the globe is underneath. On the one hand, the blue plastic envelope should represent the sea and on the other hand it reflects the disturbing plastic problematic in the sea around the whole globe. As the title already implies, this artwork should make it clear that the sea is ´floating´ in a plastic bag. On the surface, a variety of plastic materials (trash) can be found, which should draw attention to the current “plastic seas” in our environment. There are many small mirrored mosaic stones on these garbage mountains. These are placed on all plastic garbage objects, so that the audience and each individual can see herself/ himself during the inspection of the work. This is meant to emphasize the responsibility of everyone on this planet for the enormous amounts of plastic in the ocean and that behind each plastic item is a face behind. The entire artwork is going to be around 2,5 m high with a radius of 1,5m . It should also function as a rotating globe, where the observer can examine different sources of trash which ended up in the sea. Also it shall make people think about the vast amount which is floating in the universal sea. Which material is going to be used for the final composition of the artwork? Following plastic waste is going to be attached to the surface of the plastic globe: Water and soft drink bottles, salad domes, biscuit trays, salad dressing and peanut butter containers Milk bottles, freezer bags, dip tubs, crinkly shopping bags, ice cream containers, juice bottles, shampoo, chemical and detergent bottles Cosmetic containers, commercial cling wrap Squeeze bottles, cling wrap, shrink wrap, rubbish bags Microwave dishes, ice cream tubs, potato chip bags, and dip tubs CD cases, water station cups, plastic cutlery, video cases Foamed polystyrene hot drink cups, hamburger take-away clamshells, foamed meat trays, protective packaging for fragile items Water cooler bottles, flexible films, multi-material packaging etc.
