Description:
Mare Nostrum A significant part of my artistic research comes from the observation and collection of residues from nature and the environment. Sensitive to an eco-sustainable living, the juxtaposition of natural materials such as ceramic with synthetic materials like plastic offers me the opportunity to returns the contradictions of contemporary living in relation to the environment. With the recovery and reuse of organic waste and plastic waste collected on the beaches in my projects, I try to bring attention and reflection on the degradation of the environment and nature. I emphasize the sculptural beauty of residues of organic organisms in which signs of the vital process are imprinted, signs of time, a history of transformation. The peculiar fragility of these findings is taken with porcelain that registers, stops and consecrates the moment in time, pointing out the instant. In the work Mare Nostrum the shells of the sea urchin, Echinocardium cordatum, uncommon and very difficult to find intact, because very fragile, become ceramic microscultures clinging to a residue, a plastic recovered from the beach, to mean, beyond the fragility, the strength of the residual nature that can still regain possession of a possibility of life. I worked with recycled plastic as opposed to the naturalness of ceramics in the installations "Islands" (2016), "Plastisphere" and "Concretions" (2017) where the earth, our original world symbolized by the ceramic material, becomes Isola set up as a memory on portfotografie that emerges from a wider island of Plexiglas, mega-island of plastic waste; or it becomes Desert, where the clayey earth stimulated by temporal processes and atmospheric and environmental variations gives back the vision of a probable future. The works were installed during exhibitions and events of contemporary ceramics, to underline that with the plastic pollution, the original nature can be reduced to a minimum residual, it can only become a distant memory.
