Description:
The Universal Sea / Open Call 2018 P R O J E C T D E S C R I P T I O N Helena Rakic As I grow older, my awareness of the plastic that surrounds my daily life has become more prominent. Everything I use has some portion of plastic in it, whether it be the plastic bag in my cereal box, my tooth paste or shampoo bottle, my coffee lid, my library card, the list goes on. What is worse is that every week, on recycling day, I am faced with the plastics I went through – just for the week, and I thought: “There must be a way to make a positive and beautiful statement with all this plastic waste we make.” That is what inspired my portrait submission for this competition. I wanted to combine plastic waste with fashion and art in some way. The piece I am submitting is a graphite drawing depicting a young woman with an up do hairstyle, which is held together by various plastic pieces. The plastics are all kept in their original state, and combined into a sculptural conglomeration. The woman is also wearing something akin to a stylized collar that is made of plastic objects, tied together in an organic but stylized way. The idea is to show that we can re-use the plastic surrounding us in so many ways; it just takes a little vision and creativity. I think this drawing would make a positive addition to the Pure/Plastic book, because it not only shows a way to re-use old plastic, but it also displays how to do it in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I believe that any object can become a thing of beauty, even something that has been used and thrown away.
