"Vanishing Oceans Project,” is a collaboration of Linda Byrne’s visual art and Maggie Dubris’s sound art. Working together, we formulated the idea for an installation to raise awareness of the massive environmental problem of marine trash. This installation combines two sculptural works with an original sound piece into a haunting vista of oceanic decimation. "Coral Reef" uses recycled plastic 6-pack rings as its main component. The very plastics that pollute our oceans become the reef itself, its translucent ghostly quality mimicing a dead coral reef drained of its vibrant colors. "Skeleton Ships" consists of 12 bone-like ship hulls. Their rib shapes visually echo the destruction of all ocean life, the fishing industry, and our coastal communities. The soundscape melds traditionally “beautiful” sounds like whale calls and sailing songs with sounds that are killing the ocean; engines, underwater construction, and sonar, heard from an undersea vantage point. When people enter the “Vanishing Ocean Project,” they are plunged into the aural and visual landscape of a dying world. Our myths, our relationship with the sea, and the sea creatures themselves become a hypnotic elegy. We will develop this project further, expanding the “Coral Reef” using various plastic refuse from the area, and have public engagement days where they can join us in workshops to help make the “Coral Reef.” Through this activity, they’ll learn about this fragile ecosystem that is in crisis, understanding how something as small and seemingly innocuous as a 6-pack ring or a plastic bottle directly contributes to the destruction of our aquatic world. We want to inspire and excite others to use their own unique talents and skills to join the call to action.
