About the Ocean Future Lab

Welcome to the Ocean Future Lab – a place where we shape our futures with the seas and oceans together!

Our interdisciplinary project invites people from different cultural and professional backgrounds to contribute their diverse perspectives and share their ideas for a sustainable future. Together with citizens, artists, innovators and scientists as well as cultural and scientific institutions, we are creating a space for imagination and knowledge.

The Ocean Future Lab creates futures visions and positive images of future scenarios. We use facts from research and ideas from all participants. By visualizing images of the future, we open up a broad dialogue for an interested audience.

Our platform for citizen participation promotes exchange between science and society, encourages reflection and communicates scientific findings through art.

Be inspired and join us in shaping a sustainable future with seas and oceans!

How to live with the oceans?

The oceans provide oxygen for breathing and food for more than a third of humanity. They provide work and recreation and are both a place of longing and a fascinating habitat rich in species. They regulate the climate and slow down man-made global warming. The futures of mankind are directly linked to the fate of the oceans. However, climate change, pollution and overexploitation are creating increasing problems for marine habitats. The sustainable management of coasts, seas and oceans is a social challenge that concerns us all.

Background

Climate change and species extinction are the two global environmental problems of our time. Their consequences are serious, but difficult to grasp. Above all, the changes in the world’s oceans, which cover three quarters of the earth’s surface, are beyond our direct perception, but affect us directly. The finding that we need to do much more to ensure that the health of the oceans does not deteriorate further, but improves again, has prompted the United Nations to declare 2021-2030 the International Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Politics, society and science are called upon to work together to successfully implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on Goal 14 “Life below water”. The Ocean Future Lab invites all interested parties. Using art and design thinking methods, participants in the Ocean Future Lab can develop new perspectives and approaches to solutions.

OUR GOALS

RESPONSIBILITY

Climate change and species extinction are the two global environmental problems in the Anthropocene. In this context, the Ocean Future Lab aims to develop ideas and impulses for positive and sustainable future scenarios and options for action for people with the oceans. Civic engagement for a sustainable approach to the coasts, seas and oceans is strengthened.

CONSCIOUSNESS

The Ocean Future Lab creates a knowledge-based awareness of the importance of healthy oceans and marine ecosystems. The method is based on concepts such as “Ocean Literacy” and “Futures Literacy” from UNESCO. It enables people to learn how to imagine different futures and at the same time think about how to shape them responsibly in the present.

CREATIVITY

The Ocean Future Lab offers a range of workshops and other co-creative collaboration formats to various interested parties: in person, hybrid and online. In small groups of 5 participants, positive narratives are developed based on various topics. Selected stories are then visualized artistically.
