EUCC-D is the German representation of the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), the biggest NGO in Europe dealing with the sustainable development of coasts and seas. We initiate local campaigns like the 'Ostsee-Ascher' (http://www.eucc-d.de/ostsee-ascher.html) to make the society aware of the coastal pollution caused by plastic, especially cigarette butts. As part of the statewide beach litter monitoring using the OSPAR method EUCC-D regularly collects marine litter at three beaches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The results are used for scientific analysis and political working groups as HELCOM. Additionally, EUCC-D provides information about marine pollution for the public and established the platform meeresmuell.de (http://meeresmuell.de/) for this purpose. The touring exhibition "Mensch - Müll - Meer" (http://www.eucc-d.de/muellausstellung.html) informs about the problem as well, even in the hinterland.
