Miami-born Noel Kassewitz is a Washington, D.C.-based artist whose paintings and sculptures explore metaphysical, gender, and environmental concerns. Using experimental techniques that blur the line between painting and sculpture, she creates thought-provoking juxtapositions of material and meaning. In the past she created paintings that eroded the more viewers interacted with them, that physically extruded themselves through other paintings, and that were deconstructed and interwoven into newly fused works. Her most recent body of work features paintings constructed using found flotation devices and drawing their color palettes from both the objects themselves and certain periods of art history, such as the French rococo and American modernism. She uses a tapestry loom to create her own canvas and in the process embeds the objects into the woven structure, thus ensuring their ability to float as sea levels continue to rise. Outside for her main practice, she was the illustrator/co-producer for a children's book "The Ocean Adventures of Pinni, Tursi, & Mydas: Plastic Danger" and has also aided in numerous research breakthroughs with the marine mammal communication project "Speakdolphin" .
