Title:
,,plastic in progress", Part III, 2017/18

Author:
Janne Roefke

Category:
RE-place

Description:
The part III of the art work ,,plastic in progress" is made of three chairs which have their leather chairs replaced by self grown biocellulosis made of fermented kombucha, a symbiosis of bacteria and fungus. Kombucha also known as "tea mushroom" is traditionally shared between communities and families all over the world and treasured for the fermented healthy drink it produces out of its fermentation process with sugar and caffeine as a basic growing supply and individual added ingredients. Those added ingredients are influencing the colour and structure of the biocellulosis material and are showing the range of appearance in-between the three different chairs in this art piece. Beside of the loss of the original leather textile the change of material the chairs lost their function as an object to sit on and the ability to be an design object. These chairs incapable to resist the weight of a human body is visualizing the status quo how human creativity, science and technology are working on new ways to find more sustainable and more ethical approaches to form the concept of mainstream consumerism of the future global society of human mankind that runs out of non renewable ressources. We are working on it but it is not fully functioning yet.
