What’s going on at Art Moments – The Universal Sea Budapest Festival

Here at The Universal Sea, we’re busy getting ready for our upcoming event collaboration with HybridArt Management at the annual Art Moments festival hosted in Budapest. Dedicated to broadening the impact of art and the role of the artist, our project partners are devoting the focus of Art Moments 2018 to The Universal Sea project!

Running from 7th September to 7th November, the festival is host to a jam-packed program of exhibitions and events across the city. For our contribution, we aim to open a new event each week of October to keep your calendars full of exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, films, and artistic interventions. Here are some of the exciting The Universal Sea events to look forward to:

Public art, exhibitions, and films
We will present two exhibitions during the festival and, like all of the festival events, they will be open to the public for free. Opening on the 5th of October at 7pm at the HybridArt Space, our touring art and science exhibition ‘The Universal Sea: Pure or Plastic?!’ will feature the selected ‘Top 100 artists’ from our first open call who creatively tackle the topic of plastic pollution, as well as an exhibit about the facts of the plastic epidemic and showcasing innovations from our community and the participants of the second open call.

Our second exhibition, running from October 11th to 23rd, – Opening: October 11, 7 pm – brings together works from students and invited artists in the historic space of the Mikve Jewish Bathhouse. Young artists are an essential part of shaping new perspectives and set against a historical site these participating artists will engage with the past while rethinking how we live in the present and what can happen in the future. On show will be the collaborative works by students from Berlin University of the Arts and Technical University of Berlin who have been working with different science research institutes.

We’re delighted that all five of our artists in residence will also be at the festival. By showing work at the exhibitions, running workshops, and staging public interventions, they will be confronting and provoking the public in unique ways. In a public square, and later situated at the Art Market Budapest, Julia Végh and Erika Kraponczai will be doing exactly that with their huge maze installation made from plastic waste cubes.

The TRIP Hajó Boat
An open exchange of views and ideas is central to our project and so we are really excited about hosting a day-long conference on October 5th, starting at 9 am – fittingly located on a boat on the Danube in the historical center of the city! The day’s program of panel discussions, pecha-kucha-style presentations, and roundtable discussions will center on four key topics at the heart of our project: rediscovering the role of the artist, art and innovation, socially engaged art towards societal issues, and the involvement of the public. The guest speakers and discussion members will range from our artists in residence, university professors, plastic pollution researchers and scientists, innovation groups, to politicians, and we hope the audience will be just as diverse!

Co-Creation “Hackathon”
Channeling the productive energy of a hackathon and the start-up scene, our Co-creation “Hackathon” will take the form of a fast-paced creative workshop focused on the question of how we can engage the public. On October 4th, 2 to 6 pm at the HybridArt Space, groups of participants from different backgrounds, including our artists in residence and our core partners, we hope to create a dynamic exchange of ideas that capture the collaborative approach behind our project and produces some real-world ideas for strategies and actions.

International Short Film Screening
Another gem is the “The Universal Sea – Pure or Plastic?! international short film screening at the Trafóklub, October 28, 2018, starting at 6 pm. Hybridart Management will showcase a shortlist of short films – submitted to our third open call from the United States to the Canary Islands and from Ghana to Australia, and many other parts of the world – during the Art Moments: The Universal Sea Festival. Through the eyes of filmmakers, we are looking for answers to our water contamination and plastic epidemics problem.
