A great university for a great venue: The Aalto University in Espoo

Located at approximately 20 min from the center of Helsinki, Finland, Aalto University was established as a priority project in the Finnish university renewal. The idea was to create a new innovative university merging science and technology, design and art, and business and economics. Have they succeeded? The answer is yes!

On January 2010, the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki came together to form the Aalto University. Today, the institute’s ranking is at the 9th place in the world for the subject of Art & Design by The QS World University Rankings.

The idea of a merging these three esteemed academies was first given by rector of the University of Art and Design, Yrjö Sotamaa and later confirmed in February 2007. The name instead, is the result of an internal competition receiving 1.600 submissions. The name “Aalto-yliopisto” (Aalto University in English) pays homage to the life and work of architect Alvar Aalto and the importance of his work both nationally and internationally.

The educational institution is set for the long term concerning environmental issues by providing interdisciplinary knowledge that enhances sustainable development. The Universal Sea is proud to collaborate with the Aalto University and cherishes the chance to hold one of the 8 stations at the Design Factory in Espoo, from 5-6 June 2018.
